Dog Emergency Obstruction Surgery: What does it really cost?

Dog Emergency Obstruction Surgery: What does it really cost?

Our “What does it really cost” series sheds light on how much different people across the country spend on the big life events: having a baby, taking a sabbatical year, moving, getting a master’s degree, buying a house, etc.  This week’s feature is highlighting the true costs for a dog emergency obstruction surgery.

Location: Hollywood, FL

Age: 38

What was your total cost for your dog’s emergency obstruction surgery?

The vet bill totaled $2,039.12 which I did not have. I had just started a new job a month before this happened. I applied and was approved instantly for Care Credit in order to pay for the expenses.

Final Costs:  $2,039.12

Was this more or less than you were expecting?

More. I was hoping it was a quick and simple diagnosis and under $300, but that quickly changed once the initial solutions weren’t working and the next step was X-rays.

Were there other options that you considered? What are the pros and cons of this compared to other options?

The vet mentioned flooding his body with fluids via IV to see if the increased moisture would help “things move” within his intestines. However, that would have required more time and waiting. It had already been well over 24hrs since he last was able to eat or drink water, and if fluids didn’t work, it would have added more to the bills and the surgery would have been necessary anyways. So the decision was made to go straight to surgery.

What do you wish you would have known?

How I wish we would have purchased Pet Insurance sooner! We were still researching and deciding on what insurance would be best. He was only 5 months old, so we thought we had enough time to figure it out.

In conclusion, this woman’s total cost for her dogs emergency obstruction surgery was $2,039.12.

We hope this gives you insights into how someone else navigated the costs of an emergency dog surgery without pet insurance.

Do these costs surprise you?
