What Makes This Class Different

This class includes hands-on assignments that enable you to go past theory to action.  The most common action taken during class is increasing your retirement savings. While 3-4% adds up over time, most individuals will barely notice the difference in their paycheck today.

What Our Students Are Saying

I know how much to save for retirement

Margaret chapman, hospitality, mgb

“Through your class, so many of us have found a new confidence and increasing control over our lives. As I reflect on what I was like a year ago, I am astounded at how much I personally have learned and how much more secure my family is. One of our showers broke. Not a crisis! I have a healthy house repair fund steadily growing in my Ally account! I also now actually have the right amount of insurance. And we just started working on our wills. I know exactly how much to save towards retirement each month and we are able to plan bigger and bigger events. It is not hyperbole or exaggeration when I say you saved my boys' financial future by giving me a toolkit. I am so excited for my friends and colleagues who are your future students!"

Increased My 401K Contribution

PhD Grad in biotech

"I increased my 401k contribution (of course!) I also switched from a traditional to a Roth. In the past I didn't know the difference but assumed a Roth was a fancy type of 401k for people who made way more money than me. Turns out, it's probably a better choice for my future financial needs now that I actually understand what it is!"

“I’m feeling really good about my financial plan (created during your class of course)! I created a budget and I’m sticking to it which is really satisfying, with automatic transfers to an emergency savings account, maxing out my 401K and most importantly - HAVE A PLAN FOR MY CREDIT CARD DEBT :)”

Frequently asked questions

What do most people in class achieve? What's the return on my time?

Based on pre- and post-surveys conducted by the Office of Women's Careers, 75% of students who complete all 10-weeks take SOME action through class. While what you will achieve will vary based on your personal experience, most women trim mindless spending, increase their 403b savings, transfer cash from their bank accounts to an investing account so it can start growing, or make a plan to pay off debt (student loan, credit card or mortgage) faster.   Many class participants do multiple of the items listed above.

Even a small change in behavior e.g., saving 3-4% more of your income today, can lead to large savings later in life.  For example, investing ~$500 per month more in an IRA or 403b over the next 30 years could translate to $566.8K more in retirement.

Can I take the class if I do not identify as a woman?

Yes!  While the class is hosted by the Office of Women's Careers, it is open to everyone.

How do I receive reimbursement for the class fee from MGH?

All employees paid through MGPO are entitled to a $1,500 financial planning benefit every three years.  The Her Personal Finance course is eligible for reimbursement as part of this benefit.  More information is located on the MGH website here.  Note: log in is required.

To apply for reimbursement, participants must submit a receipt of class purchase and share the class certificate of completion with the MGPO office.  Detailed instructions are shared the last two weeks of class.

What's the time commitment?

The live class is 1-hour every week with about 1-3 hours / homework each week (some weeks have minimal homework and others have more). All the classes are recorded and many participants miss some classes and catch up via the recording.  The live class also includes a 30-minute one-on-one, and homework review of three assignments which may involve more follow up questions and research to help you make better financial decisions.

What's included?

Live Class: 10-weeks of live classes and a workbook of all class assignments. The course also includes individual review of three homework assignments including your monthly spending, your current net worth and your retirement projections.  Finally, you receive a 30-minute one-on-one to answer all your questions individually.
